About The current ensemble "Mary Johnson Rockers and the Spark" started coming together in 2009 and continues to take Mary's songwriting into higher gears, joined by Kenneth Peterson (bass, songwriting), Jim Kremidas (guitar, pedal steel, dobro, mandolin, songwriting, Miriam Chicurel (bass, vocals) and Matt Jenkins (drums). Their collaborative 2011 LP, Hummingbird Heart, was dubbed "a triumph" by Chris Parker in the Independent Weekly, who goes on to say, "The songs are so catchy, well-written and eclectic that, at just over 30 minutes, it feels as though it's over before it's begun."Mary isn't your average preachers daughter. Although Rockers is her last name and not a band, pop-rock influences are woven throughout her Americana roots. The foothills of the Smoky Mountains were the setting for Mary growing upin a family that doesnt shy away from attention (including a sister who joined the circus and yes, her preacher dad). For a solid fifteen years shes been writing songs and performing throughout the Southeast. In 2002 she moved to the musical hotbed of the North Carolina Piedmont which she now calls home. Both as a solo artist, with longtime friend and skillfull harmonist Miriam Chicurel-Bayard and with her former band Pawnshop Ruby, Mary quickly became a favorite on the local music scene. Venues like the Local 506, the ArtsCenter and The Cave as well as festivals and benefits have invited her back time and time again- and the Independent Weekly, theTriangles premiere entertainment guide, has featured her six times in their highlights of the week section. Two full-length albums (Says the Water © 2000 and No Place for Birds to Rest © 2008) were received with praise.
